How Much is HVO Fuel?

HVO Fuel Prices UK
Hydrogenated or hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel is produced using raw, renewable waste materials and has a lower impact on the environment than diesel and petroleum. In fact, HVO can reduce emissions by up to 90% when compared to fossil fuels, which has made it an increasingly popular option with commercial businesses in the UK.
As HVO fuel has become more widely known, more businesses have discovered the environmental benefits it has to offer. However, while you’re concerned with meeting the government’s net zero targets and regulations, we understand that you have another big concern: cost.
To help, we’ve compiled this handy guide about the price of HVO fuel.
How much does HVO fuel cost?
When it comes to transitioning to greener fuels, many businesses worry about the cost. This is because sustainable fuels can be more expensive than conventional fossil fuels. However, when we look at the cost of HVO, it’s much cheaper to switch to this fuel than other environmentally friendly options.
The main reason for this is that HVO fuel is a direct alternative to traditional diesel. It’s classified as a ‘drop-in’ fuel, which means it can be swapped and used in place of regular red diesel without modifying or upgrading existing equipment. In fact, it can even be mixed and used with fossil diesel. This means there’s no upfront infrastructure costs that are commonly associated with other sustainable fuels, such as electric.
HVO fuel price vs diesel
When comparing the price of HVO fuel to fossil diesel, the cost of HVO is typically higher. Depending on the supplier you choose, you can expect to pay approximately 10% more for HVO when compared to traditional diesel. However, HVO has been shown to deliver more efficiency, which in the long term, can reduce engine maintenance and repair costs.
The reason for HVO’s efficiency comes down to the composition of this fuel. Fossil diesel has a higher density and is formed of different sized hydrocarbons, as well as sulphur, metals and aromatics, which means it does not burn cleanly. HVO, on the other hand, is composed of uniform hydrocarbon molecules, has a lower density and is virtually free of aromatics, metals and sulphurs. The result is that HVO can help to boost the cleanliness and efficiency of your engine, as well as offering better performance during cold weather.
How much is HVO fuel per litre?
As with other types of fuel, the cost of HVO can go up or down on a daily basis. There are many factors that influence HVO fuel cost per litre, including supply and demand as well as refinery and material costs. Here in the UK, we still import much of our HVO, which means the price is also influenced by transport and limited availability.

HVO fuel duty
In terms of fuel duty rates, the Gov.UK website states that HVO is ‘classified for excise purposes as heavy oil and treated the same as diesel’ and is therefore charged at the same 20% rate as fossil diesel fuel. However, on 23rd March 2022, fuel duties were reduced for 12 months and cut by 5 pence per litre (ppl).
The previous fuel duty for HVO fuel and fossil diesel was charged at 0.5795 pence per litre but from March 2022, the rate has been reduced to 0.5295 pence per litre. This rate will stay in place until 23rd March 2023.
