At Your NRG, we talk about cleaner fuel, lower emissions and better air quality every day. But those conversations do not often reach the people who will grow up shaping the future.
That is why we have launched The Day the Engines Learned to Breathe, a fully illustrated children’s book designed to explain HVO Fuel, air pollution and cleaner choices in a simple, positive way.
Making cleaner fuel easier to understand
HVO Fuel is becoming a popular choice for businesses looking to cut emissions without replacing their existing diesel vehicles or equipment. In sectors like transport, plant hire, construction and agriculture, it is already helping businesses make practical changes right now.
But outside those industries, HVO Fuel is still not widely understood.
We wanted to change that.
The Day the Engines Learned to Breathe tells the story of Dex the Truck, who meets Holly – a drop of HVO Fuel made from recycled materials – and learns there is a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel.
Through this story, children can begin to understand how fuel choices affect the air around us and how small changes make a real difference.
Why a children’s book?
Sustainability can often feel too technical, too corporate or too far removed from everyday life.
We wanted to make the topic more accessible for families, schools and local communities. Instead of reports, jargon and industry language, this book uses storytelling to open up conversations around cleaner air and more responsible fuel choices.
It is age-appropriate, engaging and useful beyond the story itself, with discussion questions and a glossary included to help parents and teachers continue the conversation.
Our very own Beth Fountain, who wrote the book, explains it best:
“We talk about emissions, decarbonisation and air quality every day in our industry, but those conversations rarely include the next generation. We wanted to create something simple, positive and hopeful that helps children understand how cleaner fuel choices can improve the air around them.”
A practical route to lower emissions
One of the biggest advantages of HVO Fuel is that it can be used in many existing diesel engines without modification. That means businesses can take action now, without the cost and disruption of replacing fleets or equipment.
For many organisations, that makes HVO Fuel a straightforward way to reduce emissions while keeping operations moving.
That practical side is important to us. Cleaner fuel does not always have to mean starting again from scratch. Sometimes it is about making smarter choices with the vehicles and machinery already in use.
A different way to talk about ESG
This book also reflects a wider change in how sustainability is being communicated.
Businesses are moving beyond technical documents and corporate statements and looking for better ways to bring people into the conversation. Storytelling can do that. It makes complex topics easier to grasp, more relatable and more human.
For us, this is not about ticking a box. It is about helping more people understand what cleaner fuel can look like in the real world.
Supporting schools and communities
As part of our wider sustainability engagement programme, we will also be distributing copies of The Day the Engines Learned to Breathe to local schools and community groups.
We want to help spark conversations that go beyond the workplace; conversations about air quality, cleaner alternatives and the role practical change can play in creating a better future.
